Well until the water gets a little cooler, your probably better off looking for just one or two,,,several fish can be different species,,,I watch for the ones glued to the bottom,,,but blues wont necessarly do that. And finally you could have been looking at cats that just weren't actively feeding---try looking under a cloud of bait fish : :

Went out today in the Cumberland River..Tried out my HumminBird 525..Never used a fish finder before..Thing works GREAT..I was fishing water in the 35 to 50 ft range...I saw lots of fish at the 25 ft range..They showed up as fish icons with the beep..Now I also saw lots of BIG fish on the bottom in the 35 to 50 ft range around humps and ridges.....I was using frozen skip and I never like bait after its been froze but I was marking the hole,,anchoring out and putting the bait right in the middle of them...NOT A SINGLE BITE?????????????Could this have been carp????Is there any way to tell the difference on a fish finder? Arlington, Go to your sonar choices and turn the fish Id system off your using a ton of power to make those real pretty fish symbols with the depth attached to them, using the fish arches will utilise the power output of your unit, once you get used to it, then you can go to manual mode and set ranges and then you will see even more than what your seeing now. After you get used to the unit I can shorten your learning curve on it............Doc

If you have your fish finder set to catfish mode, those little fish pictures will show whiskers on the fish if it's a catfish.

I have the Matrix 67 unit which has mapping and GPS but the sonar functions are the same...........Doc Doc,,I don't know if you could find it but if you are ever able to look up the HumminBird500 and read about its controls and settings that would sure help because then ,,with you already understanding Fish Finders,,you might be able to beat some info into my thick head.lol
