Hello All,

In south Texas, particularly Mathis, there is a time of year where thousands of may flies come out into the night and happen to land all over everything.

The bugs come out at night between the months of April and July and are attracted to bright light near a large body of water (river, lake etc). If you leave the light on all night you will end up with a HUGE pile of them on your doorstep depending on the wind and temp. They have a very short life-span (hours) and tend to die before daylight after mating. After they die and are lying all over everything, they don't seem to be dried out, in fact they smell a little bit.

Does anyone that has made catfish bait before (or not) think that these bugs would be beneficial in a home made bait? Why would you think so?

I really want to know what you guys think because I am wanting to use them in the future.

Esdaddy, your post was cut off.

Yeah I think they will eat 'em up as well. The may flies are most comparable to mini dragon flies. What ingredients should I mix them with to make them stay on a hook?

I was thinking that the main ingredient would be the may flies then cat tail fibers, then what? A fish oil or blood of some sort?

channel cats.. and flatheads love them. In the summer we fly fish the mud flats and tear up the channels on blue wing olives and other mayfly flies. Ive even caught several smaller (up to 15lb) flatheads while doing this.
