Alot of us here use skip jack herring but talking about how to catch these awsome baitfish is rarely discussed so id like to share with you what works for me.

Rigs: alot of folks use what is called a sabiki rig which is serveral small flys tied on a leader with dropper lines. they work very well but are sometimes a pain in the rear to store. what i use is 3-4 small 1"-2" white curly tail grubs tied in tandom on my line. here is what you need to make this rig

now i normally use 8-10# mono for my leader but i decided to go with 25# line for the reason it shows up better with the camera and also i use 1/16oz jigs in the pic it shows 1/8oz jigs cause again it shows better.

first what you wanna do is tie on a jig to the bottom of your leader,i use a palamor knot for this, next you wanna go up about 12" or so and make a loop, take that loop and put it through the eye of the jig head and tie like this

when you cince the knot down it should look like this

now go up another 12 or so inches and repeat, when you are done you should have a rig that looks kinda like this

locations: now most of my skips are caught in fast moving current such as below dams or where you may have a outlet pipe that goes out into the river. normally if you have a good consintration of shad you will have some skips if they are in the area,my most productive times are rite at sun down and rite at sun up.

how to intice a bite: what i do is cast into the swift part of the current and reel it as soon as it hit the water and keep a steady constant speed and once i get the rig close i will do a figure 8 in the water with my rig because alot of time they will chase it all the way to the bank or boat and they will hit it rite at your feet.
if a fast steady retrieve does not work try letting it sink a bit then reeling it at a slower pace..it shoudlnt take long to figure out what they want.

this is what works for me and i am sure some of you other folks have tips and tricks you use so please feel free to post what works for you. i hope this helps atleast someone.

Andy...the way i see it is that halographic image gives off a "flash" that simulates shad or small skips darting through the water. skips are extremly aggressive and dont think twice about nailing somthing shiny that is darting through the water.

does that rig get tangled up much? In the spring when we fish for shad I use a homemade rig however it does get tangled around the main line after a few cast. Thanks for the idea

Thanks folks!
Flem...yeah it will get tangled up but its usually when your trying to take skips off the hooks and usually not so bad that itll take forever to untangle...on thing i forgot to mention is i use a swivel to attach that leader to my line..my main line is 20# power pro and normally use trilene for my leaders. you dont want to use straight power pro with no leader cause youll pull way to many hooks out on them skips. the mono gives it a lil forgiveness when they start thrashin around and tail dancin and what not.

Kris, Thats pretty much the same thing I do. When I use the sabiki rigs I will cut them in half and have 3 sabikis on a rig and trail it with a 1/8 to 1/4 oz. white curly tail jig for weight to throw it out.. I use a small swivel with this rig.
Using jigs only I usually don't use a swivel and will use 3 1/8 oz jigs spaced about 12 inches apart. I tie a little different also. I slide a jig up the main line and tie a dropper loop with the jig in place then slide the second jig about a foot below the first one and tie it with the dropper loop then tie the last jig with a cinch knot.
I've had the best luck with the bleeding bait hook in a size #6 when using the sabiki's. And the jigs I've had the best luck on are the pink that you show in the picture or white with small white curly tails. Also as you mentioned vary your retreive some days they like it fast and eratic and some days they like it slow ( the skip jack I mean lol )

another thing that works really well is a floating rapala{black and silver} seems they cant resist one of them. throw it out and give it an eratic jerk and let it float back up and repeat, they will tear the paint rite off em tho and it doesnt take long for a skip to destroy a rapala and at $5 a pop it gets expensive. the jigs are cheaper and are just as effective and you can catch 2 sometimes 3 at a time.

Skip's are at the dams in this area now. Caught 15 Tuesday and 47 Yesterday. All caught on jigs. Tried Sabiki's Tuesday and hooked one that got off. Jig head colors used were white, pink and lime green also seen other people catching some on yellow.
