I recently purchased a cast net so I could catch Shad at the local lake here but theres 2 things I have run into and wanted to see if anyone could give me some tips...
1) Is there anyway to keep them alive longer then a few minutes? I have noticed that whenever i catch them usually within 15 minutes they are all floaters. I know a dead shad will catch anything but I like to use the lil swimmers to catch larger bait.
2) I'm not having any luck catching larger shad any tips for where to cast or look for them? I can spot the schools and get loads of the ones from 1-4" but I'd like to catch some of the bigger ones I've seen around the lake.
Anything you guys could suggest would help and thanx I really appreciate all the responses.

Keeping shad alive is probably one of the most expensive and limited success you can undertake. There are several outfits that have products to help keep shad alive like the round bait tanks that provide for a swirling current, increased oxygen supplies and additives like shad keeper. Now that you got an alive shad to fish with chances are it is going to die within minutes of putting it on a hook which almost negates spending all that money, time and effort to have lively bait  So from the sounds of things you need to just put your catch on ice immediately to keep em "fresh" dead and fish em that way. Doug 158 has a way that he rig ems and he seems to tear up the big cats down at Santee---so Doug, dig out that picture and show your stuff

I think you'll find the larger shad around the spillways coming from the lake where the water is more oxygenated, try casting your net there.
