i had a friend tell me he used to work at a fish store and would save all the butterfish guts in a container and take them catfishing and he told me they were the best bait he had ever used for catfish. has anyone else heard of this before?
he also said just go to any fish market and buy buckets of any saltwater fish guts and they were great catfish bait...
what do you guys think?

I think you can't beat what is natural to the water you are fishing!

I also heard mackerel fillets make excellent cut bait for channel catfish.

I know that it's been a while since this thread started, but I work at a fish house and have tried every gut/fish there is and out of all of them tuna guts works pretty well for blues and striper liver is absolutely killer for blues and channel cats so long as you can keep it on the hook.  If you can get it to the bottom it will get hit even if there isn't any striper in that body of water.  Trigger fish liver looks pretty good b/c it is tough but I haven't tried it yet.

I live in Wilmington, NC.  I work at Cape Fear Fish Market.  I bet you really enjoyed eating those trigger fish.  Best fish in the ocean if you ask me.  Ya try the liver yet?
