Fishing is what matters on the Catters

« on: November 02, 2007, 07:58:38 PM »

Folks, I was informed today, at the local bait shop, that when the bait they have on hand is sold there will not be any more till next Spring. He also raised the price of the goldfish from $8.50 doz. to $1.10 each. Going to have to travel quite aways to get them. Looks like it is going to have to be gamefish for bait now untill next spring. They sure do make it hard to relax and catch the only fish that matters!!!!!

Bob

Believe it or not it is much better than it used to be

We had one bait shop that had goldfish and when they didn't have any (such as when flathead were biting) we couldn't get any.

Now we can get baits all year if we are willing to pay the price.
I intentionally use bluegill and rockbass when possible to save money.

.

Don't worry---flathead don't have the luxury of passing up a meal

Robbies right Bob,,you can put an awlful lot of faith in a bait like goldfish and Israeli carp,,,but the fact is nearly any small fish will likely attract any species of catfish.  The largest cat I ever caught on a trotline came off a crappie minnow   So change up and spread your species around.

I agree with everybody, free bait is the way to go, but, if you want goldfish all the time, raise em. they grow pretty quick and most wally worlds carry them.

i just paid 17 dollars for 100 feeder goldfish at petsmart.  the fish are between 2 and 3 inches and the lady said with feeding them regularly they should be between 6 and 8 inches by may...Hopefully.

i have a 40 gallon aquarium that was given to me a couple of years ago that i never used.  so i set it up in the garage which around here in cincy now it is cold so i had to buy a heater for the tank that keeps the water around 60 degrees all the time.  they have plenty of room in there and i usually feed them twice a day with some growth formula flake food.  hopefully they will be a good size by flathead season.

I hate to tell you but in a 40 gallon fish tank with 100 goldfish in there once the nitrification process starts the ammonia level in the tank will peak so high all your fish will die. plus you will be changing the water daily till the bacteria builds up enough in the tank to break down the ammonia naturally. plus for fish growth you really need 1 gallon of water per 1in of fish. so 40 gallons of water will not support 100 6in fish..even 100 1in fish......

you really need to get a cattle watter trough around 300 gallons.
then put an exterior water pump with a spray bar and you can even put a fishtank filter on the side to clean up the water for you.

well i noticed that shortly after i posted that...it worked well for four days but then i realized exactly what you just said...so i pretty much divided up in multiple tanks and now everything seems to be in better order, only had 5 of the smallest ones die so far, but i figured if half of them live til they are big enough for catfishing ill be happy, but thanks for notification.

hey no problem....i have had everything from 55gallon freshwater to 300 gallon saltwater...
you really should look into the catle feeder if you want to continue to do that...once you set it up the only maint. will be changing the filter....
