Circles for most of my fishing, for bigger live baits I like J hooks.

King Kahles almost all the way, unless I'm fishing for some eater channel cats, then its the VMC 5/0 sureset circle hook.

Gama octopus for all cats, from 4/0 for channels, 8/0 and 10/0 for flats. Just can't bring myself to try circles, sounds to me like they take half the fun out of fishing

I had never tried them until last year. Gave them a shot and seem to work real well for us. We don't have the size Catfish that you guy's back East and in the South do, so we use them for everything. We lay our rods down on the ground with the reels in free spool and let them take the baits for quite a while. The we pick them up, engage the spool and when they have taken all the slack out, set the hook hard on them. Works really good. Lose very few that way. I was really surprised when I learned a few years ago that Circle hooks were actually invented by a couple of guy's in the Portland, Oregon area and they designed them for Steelhead fishing. I've never tried them for that, but might give that a shot some day too.

I mostly prefer J style hooks. They suit my style of fishing the best for most situations.I like to cross their eyes! Gammakatsu,Mustad bigg gunn catfish, and eagle claw kahles. But I recently started using circles for the bluecats when Im on a boat, and I gotta say I think I like em just fine.Owner SSW and gamma octos are the ones I like for a circle hook. I dont set the hook with a circle tho, I let the rod load up and the fish will hook itself. Then you just reel em in.Takes alot of the fun and sport out of it for me,but Im always willing to try new things.

Love the circles. Lot of times I still need to set the hook but I do it diffrently than I would with a standard hook.
