I've been hunting & fishing all my life, but all the catfish I've ever caught have been while fishing for something else. Any advice I could get on what type of equipment (rod/reel, tackle, etc.), bait & rigging, to get started would be great. I'll probably just be fishing for channels to start with.   [/img]

I like to use baitcasting or spinning reels on a med. action rod for channels...

A bass fishing baitcaster and rod works well for channels....

They can bite real lite sometimes, That's why I like to use med. action or less for the channel cats.

As far as bait goes, I use nightcrawlers, hotdogs "cut in chunks" or shrimp.......

Here is the Rig that I use the most for Catfish

The line from the swivel to the sinker is around 2ft long....

The line from the swivel to the hook is about 1ft long....

The faster the current where your fishing, make the line to the hook shorter.......

And you can make the line to the sinker out of smaller test line, that will help if you from loosing the whole rig if you get snaged...

I hope this helps.... .......

Good Luck

I  used to catch  small cats  in kerr lake  in southern VA  at the dam on the roanoke river, but there usually no more than 1-3 lbs   I see the cats  yall are bringing in and I am jealous  I have had decent luck with bass  but no trophies.  I hope to learn alot from everyone here but  the best way to learn is to get out there and fish  so I'm  gonna get  out of here Best of LUCK TO YA'll on bringing in the monster cat & have a great evening
