if i wanted to start to frequent the drive to fish the james from the deep bottom area. what would the pattern be for the fish during this time.
where should someone new to the river look to fish and what times should i fish.
also what kind of bait should i use this time of the year?
thanks in advance.....

Any kind of structure will hold fish. Look for current breaks where the fish can get behind and wait for food to come drifting by with the tide. Try wing dams, stumps and logs, and the top or bottom side of deep holes depending on the tide. Watch your depth finder and learn the river is the best way to do it. as for bait use fresh gizzard shad caught in a gill net or throw net.

The fish will be on good till the end of april so you got a long season.  If you are going to come down like twice a month then you would be money ahead to leave your boat at a marina ($65-90 month)on the trailer.  Its alot cheaper that hauling back and forth @$3 a gallon. U'll definatly fish more.

i would work those river channel edges.  especially round them bends in the river.  cut gizzard shad is you best bet.

you are smart man gutmaster because putin them on ice is only a last resort if you cant get some that morning or night when you head out.  sometimes you have to fish with what you got though.
