My buddy Britton caught this fish this spring (April Fools Day to be exact grin) and at the time I don't think we realized just how big it was until we released it.  Just wondering if you guys can give me an estimate on the weight.  I've got a guess but I don't want to look like an  stupid  I'm about 5'10" and the boat we're in is a 19' Sea Hunt CC to give it some perspective.  I'm the one holding it and Britton's the one with it draped all over him.

Im going to guess that fish at 60-70 lbs. It has a huge head on it but dont look to have a huge gut to me. The dark color makes it look even larger. Kind of reminds me of Livebaiters state record of 89lbs. So I could be be off. On thing for sure.....its a nice one! So go ahead and send that one to the gallery. She will have her own spot that way. grin

Yeah, the head was gigantic but it wasn't a fat fish, especially in the tail area.  It had all those scratch marks all over it maybe it was on a bush hook for a while or something and hadn't eaten in a while, but it was a really, really old fish.  It had cataracts so it had to be pretty old.  They may have just been scars but I think if fat it could have weighed a LOT.

We kind of compared those pictures and they look about the same length but I think Livebaiter's was certainly fatter but the head didn't look as big.  Britton has another picture on his camera that shows how big it was from the dorsal fin forward but I can't get him to email it to me (he's computer illiterate grin)  My guess was in the 70-80lb range, maybe bigger.  All I know is it's the biggest freshwater fish I've ever seen in person, neither of us may see a bigger cat in the bottom of our boat.

I would say 78-81lbs. The fish has to be 53-55" long. Looks like a male bluecat. The reason I say that is becuase usally they are darker and have big heads for fighting. I've noticed the same thing with big flatheads, sometimes you can tell if the angle of the picture is good. It's nice one thats for sure. Most of the gaint blues at Badin that I've caught have had huge guts on them.

Man, that fish is like a smaller version of Livebaiter's state record.  The humpback and everything.  definately a male, and I would say around 75 lb. nice fish fellas.  I'm guessing that's a Cape Fear blue cat.

Yep, it was a Cape Fear blue.  We fish the tidal section, mainly b/c there is absolutely no fishing pressure on that section of the river.  I guess b/c it's a pretty good run from almost any ramp to get there (5miles just to get to fishable water during the warmer months) that most just don't want to make that run.  Only seen 1 bush hook up there in all the times I've fished it, anywhere else and there's one about every 50ft sad
