thanks guys.....

the point i was trying to get 2 was i am starting from scratch all over again and wanted to go right to what would work good for the kind of fishing intended for the gear.

i can see everyone likes something different and everyone seems to catch big fish on what they have.

i just wanted to get the most gear out of my money and have a good setup when i am done.

its like the ugly stick rods i was looking at and the sturdy sticks you can get almost 3 of them for the price of 1 ugly...
can the ugly stick be that much better being made by the same people?

and as far as the reels i am totaly lost now....thanks guys...LOL

Ron I would look around for what you can afford and start there I have used tons of rods and reels and if I win the Lotto I know what I will have but in the meantime I use the Tidewater 10,20,and 30L's they are cheap but they work for me and like I said I also have some Penn's some Diawa's etc etc but 90% of the time its the tidewaters I use    8)

ok i am going to get hammered but since i own several of all three reels, i fish nearly everyday and mate a charter boat and get paid to fish........i can honestly say::

BUY A SHIMANO !!

This should have been in the rod/reel/tackle/ section anyway Ron
but to answer your question.

ANY Penn you buy now is NOT the Penn quality we were used to in the old days- as with most things they have sold out to cheap labor for the almighty dollar and made elsewhere now.

209's are the economy modle, the 230 will last a few fishing season and even the 320 are cheap enough these days we just bought a whole case of the for the charter boat and have like 20 left in the box, when they jam up, break or just stop working I dont even save them for parts anymore.......i send them to the bottom of the ocean.

thats just my opinion of course, others will defend Penn all the way to the grave, most of all if they make money from Penn's - duh

on a positive note tho......I do have 2 penns I fish with all the time, one for catfish is a LEVER DRAG 25 and the other is a LEVER DRAG 45 for Striper trolling and I even nailed a 65 pound yellowfin Tuna with it this summer......no matter what brand it is, IF it has STAR drag.....I can burn it up in 1 day. I promise.

Thats just the way it is and not because Stone Cold said so -

If you want tackel to out last you and give your kids, remember 2 words- LEVER DRAG

I love Penn's by the way- they just suck.......well except for these two reels- Steve & Scott have begged me for them 100's of times

Defend Penn reels because I make money on them?

RACN35, go jump in the lake.

Ron I have several sturdy sticks and tidewater 30L reels too (my girlfriends use them for flounder), they will work for you just as well too. ALL the head boats use them because the tourons are hard on equip. You buy shakespeare at wal-mart and you can take it back no matter how old it is or how it got broke and wally world will replace it.......NO OTHER BRAND will do that...NOT Penn,Shimano,Diawa,Zebco....none of em.

Ron,
I use Ugly Stik Tiger Rods in Medium Heavy and Shakespeare Power Rods in Medium Heavy.  I am happy with both of them. They both have stainless guides with no plastic eyelets to break off.  The Powerods are 29.95 each and the Tiger Rods are anywhere from 55.95-69.99.
As for reels, I've only been hunting the big blues for 3 months now.  I was using Abu Garcia 6500's.  I sold them all and upgraded to 7000iC3's.  So far I am very happy with them.   But like I said, I've only been catching these fish for 3 months, so time will tell.

I would take a Shimono over a Penn. I do have one Penn I like a Penn International. I also love St.Croix reels. Diawa also has some nice reels.
