My big cat65 pound blue
« on: August 26, 2007, 10:05:12 AM »

I have turned my Bass Tracker into a Cat Tracker. When my steering cable broke I had a spare in the shed. The cable on the spare was too long so I had to do a little modifying. It started as a simple change and turned out to be a 3 day project costing about $150

I started off ripping the old floor up and removing the console along with front live well and battery box. Once I got the old plywood floor up I found that 4 of the support ribs were cracked in a few different places.

Got a 16' piece of 1x2 alluminum C channel cut it to fit the length of the supports and screwed them in with self tapping stainless screws.

Then went to Home Depot and got a 1" 4x8 sheet of insulation, a 8' piece of plastic gutter, and more stainless screws. I cut the insulation to fit between the supports.

Since I work on the outside of houses I had a couple pieces of 3/8" PVC board guarinteed not to rot. I cut it to fit in the floor of the boat and screwed it to the alluminum  supports with the stainless self tapping screws.

I built a box out of 3/4x8 PVC to mount the steering box in and depth finder on the side of the boat and put a stick steer on it to give me much more room that having a console with a steering wheel. Then I used the plastic gutter to hide all the wires/cables and mount the toggle switches and ignition on.

Here is the final product.

I am going to take the front seat out and replace it with a bench seat when I have time to make it. The front seat was just something I put in to get me on the river Sat. night. It really didn't work out too bad since when the boat is headed straight the stick is pointed to the front of the boat I could steer it with my foot.   The controle is a lil far back but not to the point where you can't grab it in a hurry. Thats what happens when you use parts off of 3 different boats to make one.

The p;astic gutter wouldn't hold rod holders too good. It isn't sturdy enough. I put 6 1/2" driftmasters across the back on a 2X10. I have also made more changes in the seating and removed about another 100lbs of wood out of the back.

Still not enough room  angry
