does anyone have a couple of pictures of a homemade drift bucket
and explain how to make one.

i understand the concept behind it but i am unsure of how to make it and the length of ropes and such.

and also the correct way to hook it to the boat.

Any old bucket will do. Drill a few good sized holes in the bottom, not enough to make swiss cheese, just mainly to let you drain the water easily to retrieve it. Relpace the wire handle with one made out of rope.  I have lost 2 buckets by not doing this. Tie a length of rope to the center of the rope handle. You will have to judge for yourself on positioning of the bucket and length of rope through trial and error. You want the bucket out enough that it grabs current behind the boat and steadys it without being in the backwash created by the hull, (which will cause the bucket itself to sway the boat) but close enough in that it will not interfere too badly with landing a fish. On a wide boat like my pontoon I can swing the rear of the boat somewhat depending on which side of the boat I tie it to. My front anchor rope is tied in the center of the boat and when I put the drift bucket out the rear the two ropes (drift bucket and anchor) will try to line up with each other, thus swinging the boat one way or the other slightly. This helps counter the effect of the wind swinging me in a particular direction. My drift bucket doubles as my anchor rope storage bucket.

Here is the only photo I can fing of my old bucket. It's cropped and enlargemed from a photo of my boat. The orange Home Depot bucket is my former drift bucket before I lost it to a broken handle last trip out. (replace your metal handle with rope) I have a carabinder on the end of my rope because the cleats on my boat are loops instead of proper cleats. I can slap the clip on in a split second without any tying. The blue bucket stores my gill net. All the extra holes in the net bucket let it dry between uses and keep it from getting too funky.

Thats the instructions I used to make mine a while back, and they work great  .....as long as you follow the directions and dont make the bottom holes too big like I did on my first one. All I had on  hand was a 2.5" hole saw and I didnt think it would make a difference to go with the bigger hole size, but it allowed to much water to pass through, and didnt pull enough to lock the boat down on anchor. it ended up floating beside the boat :o
