Driftmasters.  The best anchor for the James is a wreck anchor.

A wreck anchor is like a grappling hook. Most make their own from rebar bent and welded together. Not sure how well one would hold a pontoon in the current and mud if that's what you are considering it for. I use a 13lb fluke. Sets quick and holds well.

We use wreck anchors in all conditions in all water. All the rivers, bay and the ocean.  A small wreck anchor with 4' of chain will hold a 35' boat just about anywhere. The big advantage is they are easily recovered from structure and are inexpensive.  I use a 15lb rebar one on my 17' boat and on my 22' boat and it never brakes loose in any depth or wind. Jus my 2c.

does the chain hook to the end with the spikes or the end without them?
i see a loop on both ends but it looks like the chain hooks to the bottom. :?:
