...on Gibbons Creek yesterday.

I fished for about 30 minutes in three different places, all near some dead trees with DK Punch and frozen shad. I have heard that it's best to change locations if you don't get bite in 30 minutes.

I did see a guy going from tree to tree dropping what appeared to be cut bait under a sliding cork rig. He didn't spend more than a minute or two around each tree. Maybe that was to fast?

When I made it back to the boat ramp a couple of kayakers had a nice string of skillet ready channels.

I may take my daughters Spring Break and try again.

Well, you had a couple of poor choices of bait imo. Fresh shad would have been the best option,,and followed by some chicken liver.  Did you ask the yakers where they found the cats and what bait they were using?

At least you got to enjoy a day out can't beat that. I have to agree with the bait choices I would have tried worms or liver but than it is always easier in hindsight  :2wink: grin grin cool

It was primarily a bass trip so I took convenience baits.

BTW, I can't stand fishing with chicken liver! OTOH, when I spent my summers at the farm in NE KS in the late 70's, early 80's, they sold turkey liver in a mason jar at the local M&P, that stuff would stay on the hook and brought catfish from far away.

Nightcrawlers are available here but they are expensive, 3.00/18-24

I don't know where to get fresh shad, I could probably get some live perch outta my lake and then I would have fresh cut bait. Would that be OK?

Fishing is what matters on the Catters

Try your perch live under a bobber near under water wood. Also you might try the live perch on the bottom in the same area. You didn't say what type of water you were fishing, lake or stream. If it is a lake/pond you might to want to use a straw setup to keep the perch from tangleing the main line.
