Just to add to what WV has posted make sure that your angle of your transducer is correct, the line that is on the side of the crystal housing should be below the hull of the boat, that way the transducer is always in the water, check that first, you should hear a clicking or a ticking sound coming from the transducer it operates off of sound waves transmitted into the water, the bounce back is what is painted on your screen after the computer analyzes the data. If you don't hear that sound when the unit is turned on then your transducer has failed.
Working the unit should paint a bottom picture of the lake or river that you are on, even if you don't see an arch you should still see the bottom unless the transducer has failed or the angle is incorrect, I'm at work right now when I get home I have a picture of the way the transducer should look on the back of the boat and I'll post it on here if I can find it............Doc
I found this picture on this site from an earlier post that I had made this is what the bottom should look like on a unit. even if it don't see arches it still should see the bottom.

Here's another from my website it's in color on your unit it would be black and white
