thanks jim i finally got it turned on and the temp is showing so it was in there. a gutter man cannot afford it! i took my wife with me and she can....lol. hows that? yes sir i built up alot of browny points to get that one....lmao. naw really i had a plan and it saved me some and i got lucky and saved some more at the store. first plan was the first purchase on a credit card will save 150 bucks from bps or 10% up to a 1500.00 purchase. so that was my game plan when i walked in the store since they keep asking me to get one(credit card). well i go in the store and all they had was the display....didnt really want that one but the manager knocked off 10% more. so i said i will take it if everything is in the box for it. i had some reward points built up also plus a gift card and laid it all on the line and was hoping for some change but i still owed them 1710.00 with tax included so i was still happy. new price was 1999.99 plus tax. also i had the wife get the card in her name and if i want something later on i will get me one. i been saving up for it anyways so i will just pay it off when the bill comes. they wouldnt let me pay it off in the store. all kinds of ways to save money for folks though to do things. i quit smoking cigarettes and paid for a hunting trip to canada with the money saved. it all adds up. plus if i can get hummingbird to send me a rebate for changing out a lowrance i will really be doing good. yea the book is confusing to me some but i think i was reading too deep into it some also. now im really going to reading alot to learn how to work it....lol. thats the fun part though. thanks for your help. When ya come up to the James---holler,,,I'll show you some neat stuff out there. Dont forget to get ya memory card for it and get a computer cable for it so you can upload new and updated software, well while yer at it get another mount and power cable, another gps antenna. Mount the antenna on the house, the base mount to the computer, throw in a 12v battery under the desk and yer ready to explore the US with those maps hehehehhe

well the side image doesnt seem to get bothered much, but you fish finder part will get cluttered with noise and such.

well i seen it in action last night. i noticed my speed on the screen was off for some reason. i got to just take it to the lake and play around with it instead of fishing one day. it was a big step up from my mononchrome screen to color though. i got to move the transducer up some too. i got a rooster tail and im loosing bottom at 30 mph on the graph but i have the digital read out in the corner. found a few things i hadnt seen before and couldnt find a few brush piles i had found before with my rods....lol. maybe they was tree roots and im just not seeing them. i didnt mess with the sens. last night either. its going to take some time for me to work the bugs out but i like it so far. i do see a big advantage to side imaging in the future too. it will just take time to find the hidden treasures.

a couple thoughts mike---most of my looking is with the side image set to either 50 or 100 ft,,and I look to my right most of the time, so you'll want to pass to left a little bit, not over it, the dark color on the left side of you screen is more the depth nearly straight down, the remainder is you viewing area. yeah adj the transducer is always fun. if you got it set up for 150 or 300 to the sides small objects may not show up at all.

yep i need to adjust then becuase im pretty sure it was set for a 150 ft. to each side. so its just too much area for the screen to show good details. i havnet read that far in the catalog yet....lol. jim how much are the cards for these humminbirds? i havent even looked at them yet.

Actually the cables are around 25 bucks, ditto for a 2 meg card, most of the accessories are pretty cheap with the exception of another transducer. you need to be in the Si view ( Screen ) to change the settings to different ranges,, and wait to you see the different color options : :

hey jim can you get a bottom reading at full trottle on your unit? i know i had my transducer set too low and i raised it up and havent had a chance to run it again yet. i asked another guy if his read at full trottle and he said he didnt read the bottom out past 25 ft. so some folks dont fish santee but i do.....lol. i hope raising mine will take care of my problem so just wondering.

jim do you depend more on the side image part for finding fish than say the regular graph screen? i was told by a fellow to do that and i noticed something today with mine and im still trying to put the puzzle together. seem like when i marked good arches on the graph and flipped over to side image they wasnt there. so i focus on the side image for finding fish and it seem to work plus it added all the nice little pieces of structure that the fish seem to be laying around. dont know if i was just getting lucky or what but i hope not. i will say this according to the side image compared to the graph side a small fish can make a big arch. this may be due to the setting i was using also. sensivitity might be too high on mine. i like to run it high for some reason esp. when the fish are hiding...lol.

Micheal, If I'm reading mine right here's what I thought was happening. If your using the graph page the fish in the small cone under the boat will show up on the left side of the side image screen (the water column part (if your looking right w/ the side image). The some of the fish in the 83kHz cone will show up slightly in the side image in deeper water due to the wider cone showing a larger area on the bottom. The 200 / 83 split screen is handy to see whats further away for the boat. I use the DF setting 100% of the time, and increase the sensitivity as the water gets deeper. In 30 feet of water my typical setting is 12 in shallow water I set it to 3 or 4. I've set the 83kHz setting to minus 2 and compared it to the lowrance unit on the troller and it was dead on at that setting. Surface clutter and noise both turned off seems to give the clearest image for me on the regular graph. Finding fish in the side image is tricky at best for me w/the 797's smaller screen and my bad eyes. The small white lines are hard to see for me esp. during the day. What settings have y'all been using? And what setting are you using on the side imaging sensitivity?

Jim im running mostly default settings on mine too. What blows my mine is when i see arches on the graph and flip to side image and they not there. Makes me think they small fish. Im trying to get mine to where all i use is the side image. I was told thats the way to go. I started running less distance like 50-75 ft on the side image to get better detail and i have played with the sensi. I think what we need is a 52" monitor setting on the dash as a side unit. i love the unit but i just got to figure out what works best for me. im getting better according to last saturday. Tomorrow i wont know crap! Im learning more and more though. I just love to find a spot with a few stumps in deep water and see them white lines laying around it. drop a anchor and then take money. lets see how long it takes him to see this.... . what would be really neat is find a jug with a fish on it and then look at it on the side image. might take one of my repo jugs to the lake with me and try that out with a 20lber. might learn alot doing that as for what to look for.

Mike the fish on the side image will show up as a little horizontal white streak,,,,when I say little I mean little,,,your compressing 50 ft of detail down to 5 inches, so a 5 ft long fish is 1/10 of the area your looking at, so 1/10 of 5 inches would be a half inch white streak.......but that is only if you pass by him and he is broadside to the transducer---whats the chances of that happening , dont use the side finder to find fish, use it to understand how the structure layout is for your presentation of bait.
