Im wanting to get my old man a cast net and Im not sure  where to begin. Does any net work for any bait? And what about the size is that a big issue when purchasing one? And where is the best place to get one? Any help would be great

i would get a cheap one at wally world cause i tend to tear mine a lot...there are a couple of things to think about if you are going to be throwing them form up on a high wall or flood wall or down toward the water that wont be as much as issue but if you get a 6' net which is 12' that thing will tire you out real quick....if you are throwing from flat gorund....if i were you and you are going to be throwing it.,.. i would go with a 4' or maybe even a 5'    they do just fine....... and the ones at walmart work fine....or you can spend some high dollar at the bass pro or order even more on the internet but when you get snagged and it tears all that money down the drain..... i love mine.... just be patient  when trying to learn with one...it took me forever then i finally got the hang of it and can throw it left handed or right handed 3 different ways now.....2 real well but can catch bait with 3....lol..... robby katfish.... showed me a video on here somehwere thats where i learned...hope this helps/.///// good ;luck

ive just been using the 5 footer "laker" from wallyworld. check your states regulations on net diameter restrictions and also on the diameter of the mesh itsself. mine seems to throw fine and trust me you can (and will) rip or lose it to the depths eventually. i amaze myself at just how muchy debris is actually on the bottom to get stuck on.  I keep wanting to buy an old salt net but i cant see ripping up a 80-100 dollar net. thats just my opinion though.

yup after loosing my $100+ calusa i stopped buying expensive nets. i now use the laker ones from wally world i liek the "pro series" in 5' the best, the ones made of blue mono.

I started with a 4ft from a local bait shop.  Now I have an 8ft also from a local bait shop, but only use it in the winter when the shad are more scattered. In the warmer months I like to throw the 4ft because it is much easier (in many aspects) I ripped my 8ft this winter and my dad minded it back together he said it took about 1 hour. Personally I like  my gill net when it can be used, but that is extremely limited!

I went to walmart just the other day and all they had was a 2.5' nets, but its winter so i have time lol.

the 2 1/2 is for your wifes gold fish pond....lol....shhhhh
havent seen one that small...i have a 3 footer though.... i would go for 5 like the other guys said...i had a 7fotter i got and it was a best to throw from the ground but if it was on a high rise or off of a boat it was pretty good to go........ check laws to see what size they allow.... mine 7 was illegal

Just go right across the bridge street bridge to river trace walmart, any net they have would do fine, I was there today and they only had one net in stock so get there quick.

momma did you get bob one ? 5 ft will be your best bet - i promise.
dont believe the other accounts, if they throw a bigger net that a good thing they can. I fish every day and make alot of money on charters, believe me when I tell ya I am the Master Baiter !! - All he will need is a 5 foot net. 3/8 mess I'll bet. Wally World is a ok place to get them around 22 to 30 bucks. I just found a bunch at sports authority for $14 if you have one of those close by. I have a 5 footer hanging in the garage, one in both tricks and one in all three boats........

When you catch bait like I do all you need is a 5 footer......

Here in Ohio a 5' is all the bigger you're allowed and even that size wears your arm out after a couple of dozen or so throws.

Quote from: "WVBowhunter"
Well looks like I'll be pulling down Fri afternoon,,,might be bringing Hillbillykat3 with me...no snow and ice so traveling will be ok....throwed my new 8ft mullet net about 75 times yesterday ---it opened once so I may need help with bait,,,winds look good for me heading down river to fish for the biggn's wind is out of the south

See.....stick w/ the smaller net, could have had two 5 footers to throw for the ptice of one 8 footer !!
