i.e all supplyie i need to buy how to rig it up where to buy everything and how and where to use it....
i think that covered everything and i know this is alot but i just dont do alot of bait myself i always buy it or use what i can catch on a rod and reel.  thats why i dont have a nice picture of one of those monster blues yet i guess...

if you have a cast net and can throw it well , that would be your best bet to start off with.

NO MATTER if the worlds best catman tell you to get a gill net instead.....if at all possible stay away from the headache of setting it out, getting the bait back out of the net, not to mention killing the fish you dont want to use for bait, buy a permit, and the cost of a gill net you can buy 3 cast nets.....if all else fails and you have no other way to get bait...then go with the gill net.

thats my

Its cool- I have one too and only used it three times in 2 years.

I fish alot, mostly saltwater but I can throw my casrt net ok- In my case I dont throw over a 5 foot net....... 1/2 the time all you need is a small net where I get bait at.

Amen on the cast net.  I use a five footer and it is very adequate for the fishing I do.  In my opinion, the difficulty in throwing grows exponentially when you start getting over six feet.  Just think smooth when you throw it.

Try to find someone that knows how to throw a cast net and watch them and visa versa.  You will pick it up quickly.

i bought the video by in fisherman on the james river several years ago. they have a scene showing how to throw a cast net on that tape. thats the way i throw mine to this day. dont matter what size net up to 9-10ft you can use that method. next step is being able to read your graph and get on top of the bait and catching is no problem once you find it. i never used a gill net myself but a cast net gets hung up enough as it is. i can just see it now with a big log floating down river into it as soon as i get out. what a mess!

Catfisherus

I am with you on getting hung up.  Sometimes I catch shad on my rice farm before going fishing.  I can usually catch plenty anywhere I can find running water.  I get it hung up on everything from logs to catfish fins.  It is fun to get a three or four pounder out of a nylon cast net.  More times than not, that is the end of the net.  thank the Good Lord I have not pulled up a big water moccasin yet.  That would sure be the end of the net.

i always like the feel of a big crap in the cast net. i think im getting a bite sometimes.  what really worries me about the cast net in tail waters of dams is it getting hung on something and not being able to get it off my arm fast enough and it pulling me in the cold water. kind of scarey thought when you by yourself. dont know if there has been any cases of someone drowning from that or not but it is very possible in strong current. be careful either way.
