i was going to throw this out here and see if anyone makes thier own sinker molds instead of buying them...

if so what materials do you use and how did you figure out what weight it would be?

i was thinking of using a solid piece of aluminum and using my drem. tool to make the shape that i want...

what does everyone think about homemade molds.....

I think you got already! Thats what I did, Bought a DO-IT blank and dremeled it out for no-roll 12oz. Used a 8oz no roll for a guide and made it 3/16 bigger. I also use tire wheel weights for lead.

you can get those solid....

i have never seen them like that...

the box end of a 1 1/4 wrench will make a nice 8 oz sinker.

Long ago most metals were cast in sand.

Take the original item and press wet sand around
it and make a channel with something like a drinking
straw.  Pour the lead into the channel and when
it cools break the sand away from the object and
cut off the sprue.

Look up sand casting on the internet for
illustrated instructions.

Another option might be to experiment with
different diameters and lengths of steel or
copper tubing to get the correct weight.
Pack one end of the tube with a cotter key
surrounded with paper.
Pour lead and let cool. I uses this method
to make a bunch of drifting sinkers for use
 at Santee Cooper.

Many items are round and can be used to form flat
sinkers. Cut a portion of Alka  seltzer bottle to correct
height and use it to make round sinkers.

I would think paper towel rolls or toilet paper rolls
cut at the correct depth would make 8 oz sinkers.
The paper molds would be a single use while the
glass would last a lot longer.

I found a pic of one of the drift sinkers I made for drifting Santee Cooper.

The slim designed helps prevent snags as you drift and the little crappie bobber helps keep the hook off the bottom.

The sinker is merely a piece of steel tubing with a cotter key inserted before filling with lead.

The bobber stopper is on the wrong side the way it is now will let water to enter the bobber and will cause the bait to spin  cool

let me tell ya about yersterday sinker making experience angry  First I spent the three previous days buying enough brass fittings to adapt a propane stove to a 20 lb cylinder to reoutfit my hardware store----yeah I know they make those things---I bought it and it didnt mate up so I have to from pipe thread to some other thread and end up with 8 inches of nice bright brass fittings...put the stove on the tank and light it up....well the flames are about like a pilot light at wide open,,,read enough chinese to figure out the thing is set at 1/2  psi...go buy another and a now gotta get more fittings to fit the hose where I cut the other one off....fire it up and again a pilot light  tickedoff So read this one and it's also a halfpound psi...go look at the one on the turkey fryer hey thats 10lbs psi....so after a bunch of fittings later I hook it up and start melting lead---no mind ya this has been three days to get to this point.

I got 3 or 4 lbs of molten lead and have heated up my mold, pick up the pot and  tickedoff tickedoff tickedoff tickedoff tickedoff tickedoff tickedoff tickedoff tickedoff the handle breaks off.  molten lead goes every where even inside my leatherman knife  tickedoff tickedoff tickedoff sticks all 98 #2 sinker eyes (two are in the mold) to the bottom of a huge lead puddle and melts the plastic bag they are in.

I turn off the stove set around digging the lead out of my leatherman for an hour and clean up 5 sq yards of lead foil  :2stupid:

today I went out and bough a cast iron pan and welders gloves to start over this evening :2stupid:
