Mike

In winter I go over my fishing logs to see
if I can find subtle trends that will make my
 fishing more efficient.

I show a 17% increase on nights when it rains.
This may not seem like much but my overall
catch rate of big flathead is low anyway.

I wonder if this corresponds with a lower
rate of boat traffic. I show a slightly better
catch rate Tues thru Fri nites which I
attribute to less boat traffic.

Since I target mature flathead, I have theorized
that their hunting is made easier by rain.

When I am able to recognize and respond to hard rains,
I have found that big flathead venture into shallow back bays
as water gets muddy. The baitfish are normally able to see
and flee but in muddy water the flathead has the advantage.

Even in clear water the rain may help the big flathead hunt.
If baitfish feel the vibrations of predators with their lateral line
to help escape, then possibly rainfall can break up or mask
vibrations enough to aid big flathead.

If there is no lightning I would encourage you to fish
in the rain and decide if your success improves.

Thanks Robby. I know of a good back water off my local river that i will try. I haven't really tried for flatheads other than this past weekend with no luck. Its supposed to rain this weekend so i will go out and try  again. Mike

I beleive that it is better during a light rain or just after a GOOD rain.

I love fishing at the onset of a good storm.  I figure the fish are wet anyway, so why would they care?
