Both males with no rubs or marks from spawning.
Both appeared well fed and healthy.

Mike offered a theory that they may have been
to small to become dominant males.

We don't know where the larger one was hooked
because the hook fell out while the fish was
 in the net   :o

Well they may have had some nice smooth plastic barrels and slick mud to have spawned in

Thats kind of interesting Robby- I have not seen any blues with the typical "deer hoof" scrapes on the top of their heads this year either. Maybe the cats all decided they didn't like it rough anymore this year.

Greg

One of my guests got a flathead last week. Although it
was a bit larger at 48 pounds it did show definate
signs of spawning.

Our catch rate slowed during the spawn so we didn't
have a lot of big fish to inspect and evaluate.

As Mike already said we were spoiled last year with
several 50 pound and one flathead over 60 by
this time last year.

A blue I caught a couple weeks ago in the James had a bloody mark on its back something like that but not as big.

How long does it take for something like that to heal on a fish?

Also take note of this female I caught

I understand that stressed fish will not spawn and
reabsorb their eggs.

This fish seemed healthy and well fed but retained its eggs.

About half the flathead we have caught appeared to have spawned
and the rest have not. I figure that many spawning fish
were not feeding and others have found a good food source
that means they do not have to hunt very long when they feed.

The water is a little low but temp is more comfortable than most years. It is
possible that panfish cannot hide in brush at night because most is along shorelines
that are now exposed due to low water. Small fish without brush would be easy
 pickins for prowling flathead.

We have found evidence of inexperienced flathead fishermen
mis handling
flathead (2 dead flathead) but they would make no discernable impact on the entire population.

I have had slow spots in many years and the fish returned to feeding normally. I
never understand if the move locations or
merely change feeding patterns.
I do believe the big fish are eating something somewhere
