Howdy,

I wanted to pass on to the Master Catters crew a couple of free first fish awards. We've talked about these for a while at our site and decided that we need to encourage the next generation of anglers and these awards are a good way to do it. There are two awards, one for a first fish with a photo and one without. Each award is suitable for framing.  I'm giving my nephew one in a couple of days and I think I'm as excited as he will be. I'm hoping his smiling face and that massive one pound panfish hanging in a frame on the wall will inspire his friends. I hope each is encouraged to put down the XBOX game controller and go fishing with him.

The awards may be downloaded at this url.

If the child is at least 13 he can have his own fishing page with a personalized url. Everyone gets a free web page but you have to be at least 13. He can post pictures, youtube links or anything else fishing related on this page.

Enjoy and take a kid fishing  ! ba

Great Idea, Bad Angler
If kids started getting away from XBoxes and getting back outside like when I was a kid, there'd be a whole lot less 300lb kids....... 8)

By the way, you ought to make time to get to Monticello one of these days. I don't hardly go anymore without getting at least one decent Blue Cat.......

Hey Bluegrass Cat,

I'm dying to go fishing but have NOOOO free time. Monticello I keep thinking is a good trip. I'm downtown and my nephew is in Blythewood...so you are fishing about 5 miles west of him. Yet it's 5:35 AM and once again I spent all night writing code.  When I aint working I'm taking care of little old ladies with Alzheimers. I may come out and just talk to you one night..bring my rods and a camera. I doubt I can make it more than 2-3 hours but I'd love to fish with you.  Maybe I can get a couple of shots for the web site. Love to see you and a big  blue on one of our pages. How often you come over to Columbia? I need to just cruise out there one day and scope out the area.

Spread those awards around. It's been in my mind for 60-90 days and we just got them done.  I think we'd have more kids fishing if those that DONT fish saw how much fun those who do fish have.

Virginia has a program called - VIRGINIA JUNIOR ANGLERS PROGRAM

Virginia Junior Angler Program
The Virginia Marine Resources Commission encourages young anglers to become responsible anglers and good stewards of our marine resources. As a part of this effort and to encourage young anglers to appreciate the rewards of catch-and-release, anglers 15 years of age and younger can participate in the Virginia Junior Angler Awards Program. Young anglers catching and releasing 6 different species of saltwater fish during the year earn an award certificate, baseball hat and decal. The program is free, there are no minimum size limits for the fish, and virtually all species of saltwater fish qualify. All a young angler has to do is obtain a Junior Angler Card, complete the program requirements, and return the card to the office of the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament. Program awards will be processed in a couple of weeks.

Hey RACN35,

Glad to see VA on the ball. Here in SC there is a program called SC Reel Kids. Any child 6 to 16 can join. Children in the program are given a series of goals to complete (eg go fishing at a state park, take three friends fishing, clean a fish, etc). All goals are age appropriate with very young anglers having simpler goals than those in their early teens. Throughout the year there are prizes given out of free tackle which is donated to the state by companies like Shakespeare. When the child graduates at age 16 the state has gained a new educated angler. I believe the first fishing license is free for them.

I re-designed and rewrote all the software as an outside contractor several years back. It's a great program, see http://screelkids.dnr.sc.gov/. Be sure to look at the cool art program for Reel Kids members, http://screelkids.dnr.sc.gov/ReelArt/reelartarchives.htm. Great stuff.
