I went out and got me a cast net. MY question is what do you guys look for when you go out to catch bait fish like shad or minnows. I have seen the schools on the river but not in a lake. Also any tips on casting will be helpful. Thanks

Well this time of year is more difficult but I usually use it around culverts and creek mouths in the morning and evening while they are still shallow

Yesterday on the lake I saw a school of them in 1 foot of water and they looked like a bait ball in the ocean they were so thick.  I eased the boat tward them with the troling motor and stayed extremely quiet till I reached casting distance. I had the net ready to throw and made a perfect cast right on top of them. I caught at least 100 in the single cast and one unlucky largemouth that was feeding on them  :o

Tips on casting it the best I can say is PRACTICE!!!!! and when you think you got it practice some more!

look around the lighted piers at night but you need to be careful. some have brush piles under them. if you see brush in the water .....run from it. really any light at night will have some bait due to the plankton it draws  and the shad are eating the plankton. throwing instruction well buy the ten dollar tape and watch it. really its well worth it. i bought a infisherman catfish tape on the james river and the fellow on there showed how to catch big fish and throw a cast net. i throw mine like him to this day. also i use my electronics to locate bait a lot of times also. i catch most of mine before daylight or at night. under dark skies is the main key most of the time unless you got a great place loaded with bait. a flicker on the top as suggested by the other post is a good sign also.

a while back I posted several threads on castnetting. Go to forums, skroll down to The Fishing Book Of Knowledge and click on Fishing Eqiupment. Then go to page three, here you will see Castnetting ABC's Part 1 through 6. There should be a video attached for further explanation. If the video isnt there message me and I will redownload it for you.
