Hello all I was just wondering if anyone on here is from the northwest Ohio area? I generally fish in the auglaize river(Defiance Area). I was just curious if anyone knows of any good catfishing holes in the area. I know Power Dam and Independence are pretty good, but I am kind of looking for something new. Also The biggest channel cat I can seem to catch out of the Auglaize is about 2 lbs. The river is 12-14 feet deep throughout. Are there any tips or pointers to catching the larger ones? I am using shad and a bottom rig but the really big ones seem to elude me.

Try fishing the area's with structure,,preferably wood, downed trees and log jams typically hold the bigger fish, also make sure your bait is very fresh if using cut bait and small live baits for this time of year.  Not familiar with your area, but using those tactics works most every where this time of year.

Do you use a bottom rig in those areas or a float rig? Also how big is small live bait? I usually use about two inch shad, do I need to use a little bit bigger or is that ok? Also if you use a float rig how deep should I go? Thanks for the feedback WV.

Yea 2 inch or slightly bigger will be ok for the time period, but you'll want to go smaller with time going into the fall just match the predominate bait size for your area,  I generally do most of my fishing on the bottom and with channels they will run up and down the water column for feeding so suspending a few baits wont hurt either,,just remember the further up the water column you fish the more apt you are to catch trash fish like bass and musky  shocked grin

I definitely do not need the trash fish grin. What kind of sinker rig do you use? I have tried both the three way and the slip sinker rig. I have used the three way all of my life and just tried the slip sinker rig recently. It seems to me that the three way works best on muddy bottoms. What do you think? Also what kind of hooks do you use? I usually use an offset 4/0 hook but recently bought some circle hooks and opened the mouth up a bit and they worked great. I cant seem to catch a thing with an unmodified circle hook. I know that you are not supposed to set the hook but that doesn't seem to help either. What works well for you?
                                                                                                                                                      Thanks again for the feedback

Wv I got your message on the hooks in the other forum thanks. I will try using larger hooks. What about the sinkers? Have you had any luck with slip sinkers on muddy bottoms?

yep I use sliding sinkers almost 100% of the time,,,I also use what is called sinker slides on my line as this allows the line to glide thru the plastic tube without hardly any resistance.  So that is my basic rig for flatheading and blue's,  For channels it's generally just some pinch on split shot or a bell sinker on the bottom with a dropper loop in the line.
