Just wondering what is your best month for catching flats? I know it's differant in differant parts. My best month is usually june, but last year i caught far more in august than all other months combined.

I've had the best luck in the early spring months after a good water raising rain , muddy water on the rise seems to get em going good around here .

May and June are the prespawn and spawning periods for flathead. During prespawn males are more mobile and active surveying potential spawn sites and guarding them from other males.
August-Sept-Oct the flathead seem to feed hard as water cools to store fat for the winter. Flathead are mostly dormant in winter but posess the ability to store fat in their muscle tissue to survive.
These 2 periods may be peak periods but Mmagis and I continued catching several trophy cats all throughout the summer.

The spawn---the slowdown of flatheading---Well I was under the notion that it was a 2 or 3 week period followed by a couple weeks of inactivity to regain some strength again---boy was I wrong. Doing, and listening to Grapplers noodling last year in VA and NC those boys, and girls are doing the spawn for nearly 3 months---June, July and August...all the eggs weren't laid in one big overnight period but small fist sized clumps with days and sometimes weeks between each spawn....kinda make sense if ya watch poultry like chickens and turkeys,,,they dont lay all their eggs in one day---it's spread out over several weeks to insure the survivablity of the species,,,but the hatch isnt, that happens almost all at once within a few days of each other---sure there is a few early and a few late, but 90% all occur within a week --- interesting huh.
So what does all this mean to you the Flatheader,,,recognizing the periods and adjusting your baits accordingly. I'm a firm believer in the "food groups" for the species. Prespawn fish need lots of protein types of fish like gills, bass, and crappie if availiable---these species have reached moderate size since they hatched and will range from 5 to 9 inches (get the picture) Post spawn fish althou still in need of protein also need fatty/oily fish such as suckers, shad, skipjack and others. Since most of these hatched in late spring and early summer their size is much smaller in the 1 to 3 inch range----hince the targeting of smaller baits during the fall months. The gills, bass and crappie still work as they also are in preperation of winter and have began storing their own body fats.

I understand you thinking bowhunter but I stick with the old adage that they would rather eat one big meal than 10 small meals. LOL The last Flat I caught last year was a 35 pounder in september, water temp 57 degrees air temp 40 or less. He came after an 8 hour stint with a 13 inch crappie. I even ran out of coffee in the bottle. LOL But he made my night cause I knew he would be the last for quite a few months.

I thought it had more to do with water temp than what month it is.

I think the time of year and the water temp work together to make some months better then others and that freak weather like cold fronts or extra warm fronts could change that from one year to another.
