How would we go about targeting 3 to 5 pounders? What would you use for a rig, bait and where would you look for them?

Around my area here thats about the extent of the cats once in a blue moon you may get a 10 to 15 pounder but its rare. We just use liver sometimes clams sometimes mackeral even tried vienna sausages they worked tried marshmellows have caught them on them not to often though.

On my lake, liver works as good as anything. Think shallow water, especially early and late in the day.

in my area i fish the smaller rivers and creeks, for the bigger rivers are about 100 miles from my house. but i use creek chubs, smelt, pike minnows, even a big old ball of worms, and liver. most of the smaller rivers and creeks by my house are full of channels from 3 to the 20 lb range but with most in the 3 to 10lb range are very common.

For Drifting I'll use a small whole shad with the gut pocket cut open to leave a better scent trail. If I'm bank fishing I'll use cut shad with the gut pocket intact. If you use Dough bait or Dip bait in my area you'll catch alot of 1 1/2 to 2 pound eaters. They'll heckle you to death and you won't be able to catch anything much bigger. But you will catch alot of them.

Last year Pappa Smurf and I used all kinds of bait. Had the best luck with cut bait. Don't have a cast net so I used my ultralite to catch whatever I could catch mainly bluegill and rock bass and an occasional chub. The chubs seemed to do the best by far. And actually my biggest fish last year were caught on bank lines that I put out while we were fishing. Not exactly sure why that happened unless I should've been fishing where the bank lines were.

i have my best luck with eater size channels using whole small gizzard shad on a carolina rig using 2/0 kahales or 3/0-4/0 circles hooked through the mouth and nose..a trick i use is a "blow the shad up" usuing a worm blower, walleye fisherman use a worm blower alot to make crawlers float and it also works well on smaller shad, the hard part is trying to inject the shad in the rite part of the body so the air dont leak out, which i found it best to stick the needle of the worm blower in the baits rectum..it works best on 2-3" shad, you go any bigger and youll have a hard time making them float exspecially with the weight of a larger hook needed for larger baits ,this also eliminates the need for a float when drift fishing...ive never told anyone that secret but oh well, stick it under your hat and try it someday,it works very well. here is a pic of a worm blower..will cost ya about $1.50

Some of my favorite baits for catching eaters would be creek chubs, chicken liver, and stink baits. The best would be catalpa worms, when in season

in my neck of the woods for rivers or creeks i would use liver for that range...back up a ways in a feeder creek 1/2 mile from the mouth of the river...look for structure and such....for channel cats....worms also work...now for flats at that range in my opinion there not near as pick as the 10#+ range so you can use the same but if i was targeting flats i would use red head chubs or smaller shad....

I only target blues but if I were going to target eater sized channels in upper 40 degree water on up. I would use strictly a carolina rig with an 18 to 24 inch leader and a 2/0 trebble hook baited with Dk's punch bait.
