Who does well with cut bait for flatheads? Probably 80 percent of the flatheads I have caught in the last 5 years have come on cut shad.

cut bait exspecially skip jack has produced quit a few flats for me. in the fall id say i catch the majority of my flats on cut bait, but in the spring in summer gills seem to out produce the cut bait for me. but yea i do pretty well on cut baits.

Big fresh shad heads with gut pocket still attached account for alot of the flatheads I catch. To date I havent had any success on body parts unless the head remains intact.I have even caught a few on frozen. But if you want BIG flatheads more often, your best bet is to use live bait.I have noticed that in early spring and late fall is when Im most likely to land a flathead on cutbait.Katfish explained why this is to me and it makes alot of sense. When flatheads are coming out of thier dormant stage they prefer a soft meal to get their digestive system going, and vice-versa just before they go lay down for the winter.Allthough I have caught many on fresh shad heads,(1-40#)the biggest flatheads I have caught (50+)were taken on live goldfish,Israeli carp, and bullheads.

Don't know if its just because its a different area or not but all my big flats come on live bait..I get a few smaller ones on a wad of worms.

Live bait for me, never caught a flat over 20 lbs on cut bait, even when it was fresh,

My biggest of 50-lbs came on frozen cut shad..I was fishing live suckers to no avail, so I baited with the frozen shad and the flat hit within 2 minutes

I am no flathead man but the few big flats I have landed have all been on live bait, one on eel, one on goldfish, several on 3to 4 inch brim, and a few on extra larger jumbo minnows, these little things are bigger than some fish I have filleted

We rarely catch flatheads but the last two we caught one was caught on a shad fillet about a 6 pounder and the other was caught this past December taping a show for hooked on fishing and it was caught on 2 small whole shad wormed on a 7/0 kahle and it was almost 25 lbs.

Kayla got a flathead on cut bait

She was fishing for channel cats and it picked up the bait.

All the rest of our flathead have come from live baits.
