What's Really Goin On ?

When you Flathead fisherman fish around structure do you just cast as close to it and leave it there or do you cast as close to the structure as possible and jig your bait ?
I know Flatheads will lye under structure and wait for a meal to swim by , but they will also lay in the branche's of a sunken tree as well , so if your fishing with a cut bait I think jigging the bait will get more action , what do you all think ????

I normaly use live bait to get Flats so jigging a cutbait should work in that nature of covering an area and trggering a response.

i to use live bait for the flatheads, but i have also used dead bait in the same manor as live but with fewer flats, so i think the jigging tactic would work good.

Personally I just put live bait in as close as I can and I dont use cutbait for flatheading.

Well again the river Flatheads dont seem to be as tempromental as the lake flatheads I fish---and another thing,,catching a 10lb flathead aint quite the same as catching a 25+ flathead,,,the lake flatheads I fish for seem to only want live bait and there are no shad species in the lake.

On the river I fish I don't seem to have to get all up in the timber to catch them. I will toss baits as close to individual structure as I can though without getting hung up on it. Say 3 to 5 ft away.
This is night fishing with big live baits though. Now if you want to catch a few in the daylight use cut bait and toss it right to the edge or farther in. Having said that I havent tried it but have read numerous accounts of that being the best method for daytime cats.
Also I have gleaned over the years that some systems have flats that prefer cut bait over live. Even on this river I met a few old rats that tell me if they ain't hittin live bait , then scale it up and squash its head and they will hit that. I'm a purist I guess cause I only want to use them live lol. Just experiment.

I put my bait as close to structure as possible but as far as the cut bait for flatheads I wouldn't know anything about that I only use live bait. I know everyone says that they will hit live bait and cutbait and I have seen that done while fishing Lake Marion but in the New River where I fish I have tried cut bait numerous times without a bit of luck and we were catching fish right beside it on live gills or chubs.

hey flatcat i think we should put it to a test this summer i know i am im gonna have 1 out every time i go with cut bait just laying there i know this has worked for me but im also at the same time have one out ill bounce in slowly and one ill just jig in more quickly and the others will have big ole hand sized bluegills and maybe a gold fish now and then the ones i jig and the one laying there will most likely be shad all the time.....so i really think we should really put it to the test and if anyone else would like yo praticipatie in something like this maybe we could ask a moderator to help us set up some kind of a chart to show what when and where and what kind of baits etc..myself i think this would be a great tip for future readers........    8)

I like to start out a few yards out from the cover to catch the incidental or secondary fish holding just away from cover. If that dose not get a bite I will recast as close as possible. If that dosn't work I will  let out more anchor rope and back up to the cover or right above it and drop baits around and into the cover (near verical) and move them every couple of minutes. It seems on the real tough days I end up mostly fishing in the cover.
