I know it has been a while since the spawn around July....but how did everyone do, the small tournament we had with 8 teams was unreal...you weigh in your 5 biggest cats, and then your biggest channel, its a small tournament 20 $ each, but it is worth it for a good time and to get out of the house, usually around 30-50 pounds wins it, but after the spawn, all 8 teams had over 40 lbs. and there were 5 cats all over 30lbs caught....it was by far the best tournament and night of fishing I have ever had....how did everyone else do?.....the pic of me and my partner was a 38 pounder....(2nd place) we had 64 pounds total...1st place was 75 pounds with a 40 and a 20 pounder and some "squelers"

i did fair with the blues but not much for numbers. got a 48 one night and caught several fish in the 20-30s. mostly using live bait on slip cork rigs. i found some nice flats at santee which has a earlier spawn than my area with the 3 biggest coming in at 47,49,52. here lately the yadkin catmasters series has been having two fish weigh in around 40lbs with a field of 8-10 boats. the bigger blues bite is somewhat off for most teams. the nighttime bite has been excellent for flatheads lately with lots of 20-30 lb fish and the odd big fish mixed in. the blues bite should pick up nicely in the coming months. i know it wasnt your question but i smoked the blues on deep water ledges right to the spawn. im just not convinced the blues spawn in shallow water at all. i think they like dark holes to spawn in and the lakes was really clear here this summer so i think we had blues spawning in water as deep as 30-35 ft but on the ledges. i marked them there one week and caught them and the next week all i could do was mark them for several weeks and no bites. i caught post spawn fish out of 50 ft of water at santee also.

Bob
It was slim pickins for me.

Normally I catch lots of males trying to regain weight lost during spawn.

This year just a few mid sized fish

The big flathead were feeding. I suspect they were
ambushing the abundant juvenile shad and then
had no need to go hunting meals at night.

I caught some towards they very end of the
flathead feeding.

Water temp was 62 and I feel like these were simply
migrating to winter holes and decided to eat my bait
on their way.

Robby those are very nice cats. Did they come out of the river? F/m and I didn't do very well from the river on our end of it this year.

Robby, those are some beautiful flatheads.  You may say they are only midsize but they are real nice.

My big flathead for the year is 15 lbs  :(   I usually do the best in the early part of the year (March-May) and the biggest fish of the year (so far) came then (71 lb Blue).  But this year we also did pretty well after the spawn.

These were all caught in August & September:

This friend of mine had a previous big fish of 5 lbs, LOL.  He did catch a 20 lb Flatty that day too.

Brad got this one with me on Labor day

I got this one the same week during a local tournament.

This one came the 3rd week in September.

The years not over yet.  Still some time to get on some good fish.
