I have used the King rig for years fishing off piers and seawalls the only problew I see would be that the bait could swim down to the weight and do a line wrap  :scratch

    Keep the bait line short to limit the range.  I usually keep it less that a foot.

I have seen something along these lines in some catfishing book or other but what they did was take some heavy line and atach it to a stickup near where they wanted the bait and run the line back to the bank and tie it of and use a slider rig with or without suspending and the bait was placed  over on over without disturbing the targeted site.Clothes pin might be the simplest to drop bait to the bottom
