Mmagis and I removed the carpet from the pontoon and replaced it with Tuff Stuff
rubber deck coat from Cabelas.

We weren't sure we would get good adhesion to the original deck so we
screwed down some 1/4 inch plywood.

Here is a pic of the first coat. Our supervisor is in the background.

I have no fear of having good traction. Only time will tell if the coating is
durable. This project looks pretty good so far.

Can't wait to get some flathead on the deck

Robie

Is that like the spry on bedliner or is it softer? What did it cost to do the floor in it minus the plywood? I have a bowrider I replaced the floor in so right now it is bare fiberglass. If that isn't slippery it would work well instead of slimy carpet. I was thinking of the spay on bedliner for it but it is too hard I think.

I don't recall the cost, but you can find it at Cabela's. I was thinking $70/gallon, or close to that. It's dry to the touch within an hour when mixed completely. MUCH longer if not mixed right. It seems to me it's softer than bedliner material, but maybe not. It appears to be latex paint with rubber particles in it. I've walked on it a few times this past week after drying completely, and the rubber really grabs your feet. We rolled on the second coat after the first was dry to the touch. That's when it really started building up and looking good. The first coat soaked into the wood and was quite thin. Sort of like a "primer" coat. The second coat adhered to the first and we had complete coverage. We did a 64 sq/ft area and used about 1.25 gallons.

Killer! Did you do the whole deck, or just the front platform? I have been thinking of ripping up the carpet to the front and rear of my toon (the often messed areas) and doing something like that. The only problem with mine is it has an aluminum deck that is ribbed. I may have to lay down a thin sheet of luan or something to be able to do mine that way.

thanks mike.... the boat i was looking at need new carpet....let me ask you this.,... you said it was kinda softer but still grabbed a bit....with the rubber....could you walk on it barefooted and still be somewhat comfortable....? i just know it would be a lot easier to clean out  and all....and last a heck of a lot longer than carpet as you stated

It's not as comfortable as carpet obviously, but it's not bad at all. It'll catch a lot less fish hooks, which should make it a bit safer.

It is holding up fine.

My wife sits in a chair and I turn her to fight fish.
This has put a few dings in it. I got it muddy with 3 nights fishing and 2 minutes and 2 buckets of water had a nice clean deck.

As Mike said it adheres well to itself so I can repair the little dings easily.

We were also surprised to find it sticks well to metal surfaces. We scraped it off of aluminum trim after it dried. The instructions indicated it was originally made for ships decks which are usually steel.

Many of the lakes visitors do not agree that my boat should be functional and not necessarily beautiful. cool

I think the deck looks best when viewed from this angle.

Let me assure you that no one was more surprised with this
deck coating and its performance than I was.

I can let go of the steering wheel and clean the deck as I
cross the lake. I no longer dread the job of cleaning the deck.
It has good traction in all conditions and holds up as you
would expect rubber to hold up.

I got the idea to use it after watching catfish guides clean
their fiberglass decks. I originally asked bedliner places for
estimates but quickly discovered that to be cost prohibitive.

The cost of the paint may seem high until you compare it to
cost of carpet replacement. For me it was the right tool for the job.
