well I use at least 50lb line and if I am in a area that I know has lots of structure I use 80lb test when I feel them go around some structure I just keep pressure on them for a while and see if they will come back out if they still wont come back out after 10 min's or so I will try slacking off the line by backing down the drag [never go to free spool cause it will backlash bigtime] and see if they will come out then I have set a pole back in the rod holder and waited over an hour and all of a sudden the line started moving and I caught a 15lb flathead just had to out wait it  smiley
now all of this is based on the fish still being on the line if you can feel it struggling then you still have a chance of catching it but no struggling means no fish they have wrapped you around something and have pulled loose  sad but when in doubt just slack off the line and let it sit for a while and see what happens  :2wink: cool

My big cat50Lb. Flat Head
« Reply #17 on: June 06, 2008, 06:07:44 PM »

Hey Guys, Just wanted to let you know Doug and I had a blast, especially me since that was the biggest fish I have ever landed in my life, and yes I will be getting a bigger landing net. Half of the fish was in the net and the other half was trying to get out, but Doug managed to pull it on to the boat. Of course I helped because the doc said he could only lift 25lbs.  :2wink: rolleyes The trip orignal started out as Striper outing but quickly become the flat head show. Since we could not find the area we oringally planned to fish we set up in a cove Doug thought would hold some Flatties. That goes to show, you can't take Doug anywhere without catching some nice flat heads. Now this is a lake know more for its Striper, Bass and Crappie fishing so catching a flat head of that size comes as a pleasant surprise. Trust me I will be setting up in the back of coves a little more often smiley smitten smiley smitten smiley smitten

yeah I have seen a few myself... I had to cancel the trip, my father-in-law had an anurism burst this morning, we are all at the hospital. The doc said the surgery went well but he is not out of the woods yet. We  will see.
