Just wondering if anyone would be offended if I started a little thread about Sutton and the Cape Fear.  I know that this is supposed to be a Yadkin chain forum but just thought I'd ask.

Hey I fished the Cape Fear one time. Nothing over 20lb for blues or flats. I think the weather had alot to do with it. Alot of evening stroms, bad ones.  If you fish the Cape Fear never go down with anything lighter then 40lb line. Tones of snags.

Nah, no blues.  Well, there's blue crabs but no blue catfish!?  I think that the water just gets too hot for them, even in the back lakes it gets to around 94-95 at times and that's even at night.  That and there's not much deep water at all and no real shad population anymore, plenty of mussels though.  There are some real nice channels though up to 20+lbs grin

yeah, i hear sutton is good for flatheads, it is such a shallow lake you can find the deeper water and find the flatties pretty easy, is that the case wes?

The deep water is easy to find(well, most of it) b/c it's right up on the bank.  Another reason I believe that the lake is so hard to fish at times is that about every 15-20ft there is a perfect spot for a flathead to lay.  When they cleared the 1,100 acre lake they just left all the trees, logs, stumps in there so there's a ton of places for them to hide.  We usually fish areas where the lake "necks down" and kinda creates a funnel for moving fish and then areas where there is current.  The old creek channel is good in places as well.  In almost every spot we fish though we've got some baits out in ~15ft of water all the way up to around 2-3ft of water.

Man thats sounds like Sutton lake is perfect for gaint flats. Around here finding good structure is hard, wood structure that is.. Theres not much on way of downed trees on the bottom. When I do fish around blowdowns all I ever get is bass, stripers and channels. that would be real nice seeing that kind of structure on one of those new fish finders, that allow you see everything on the bottom.

It's a great place for big flatheads, the hard part is getting them to the boat.  Everytime I hear of you guys being able to fight a fish for 10-45min I'm jealous.  If you fight one for more than a couple of minutes I promise they will have you in something.  I had my heart broken too many times last year.  I've stepped up my gear this year and haven't lost a fish yet to getting wrapped up but you just have to tighten the drag down and winch them in.  But that's one of the reasons that I like fishin' there, it's pretty much man vs fish when it's like that grin  Unfortunately the big fish usually beats man sad
