My big cat30 lb. blue cat
« on: May 04, 2008, 02:19:30 PM »

every time i go up to west virginia to visit my family i try and mannage to go down to gauley bridge and fish from the kanawa falls at the state park there. i fish for catfish but i always seem to catch anything but. my largest fish to date is a 25 lb. freshwater drum. ive seen gar swimming at the top near the walkway and ive seen a 5-8 lb. smallmouth taken outta there too. ive herd of some pretty good size muskies being taken but i havent witnessed any yet. but my question is has anyone caught any good sized catfish out of there recently? or any catfish at all recently?
im curious considering ive been so unsuccessful. do yall have any tips or trick i can try to make my experience more pleasurable, because i really do like fishing down there.... im just not havin much luck. any help at all is much appreciated!

Boy that is a beautiful spot ain't it,,,I must have driven by it several hundred times in my life, Falls, locks, and dam fishing can be very very good regardless of what your going after, but its all in the timing.  And that timing is the spawning run.  For that area I would place the channel cat run around the 10 of May with the flatheads being 2 or 3 weeks later...bottom bouncing some big live baits and crawdads from a boat should provide all the excitement you can stand.  No boat that wade fishing the rapids below can be equally exciting,,wear your pfd thou as current can be very dangerous.

thanks man ill put this info to work. do you think there could be any monsters lieing under the old power plant pipes or under the backwashes of the falls. i always wondered about the underwashes of falls, i was curious if catfish could do the same as trout in hangin up under the rocks of the falls where the water dumps. like wating for fish to dump over or something. do you think this could be possible sence the current is so strong.

Well up to a point there can be some great cats there, then biology takes over and they have to seek out a mate and do their thing.  Some of these areas takes an enormous amount of energy to stay there,,,so untill they get tired and seek shelter---probably only for a short time and the bigger they are the more likely they are to move on to calmer waters.

well most of the river in that area is pretty fast paced current wise because of the falls. if thats the case then im going to have to try and find a calmer spot somewhere. i should probably try and fish where the river funnels down by islands too right?

where theres falls there are back eddy's look on the sides for the slack water areas try casting a big bait above the back eddy and let the current carry the bait down cats love to sit in those area's and let the food come to them  2wink

i have fished the kanawa falls before and really never caught many cats all though have caught a few smaller ones around the 5 lb mark have caught a lot of nice small mouth there and hooked up with a few muskie .I wasnt targeting big cats at the time i was fishing there but am planning on going back sometime in the near future and giving it a try . I believe there is probally a few nice cats there.let us know how you do when u go back.

yea ive seen a guy catch a good sized mucky there off of creek chubs. ive cought a few small mouth there too. and some good sized longnose gar around the dock. but my biggest fish there is a 25 lb drum. i though it was a cat at first till i got it in. it was my biggest drum and ironicly my first. i thought it was a carp when i got it in. i was really confused for a few minutes believe me. but yea i should be headin back up there around memorial day. to come back with the report.
