Hello everyone, I just found this page on a yahoo search and I am very excited to chat cats with you guys and gals. My girlfriend and I have been spending a lot of weekends on the New River but because we are not familiar with it have come up somewhat empty handed on a few occasions. We have fished the Wythville area and lately just above Billesby Dam. We have caught a few cats but nothing to brag about. If someone could point us in the general direction we would greatly appreciate any help we can get. Thanks guys and happy fishing..........

Welcome to the site Jeff. The New River is actually the oldest river on the continent and supports both Flatheads and channels. Your timing may be a little bit of your problem as the flatheads are still spawning and will be in their resting period soon. By Mid Aug thru Nov the next period of good fishing begins. For the big flatheads search out the slower sections of the river with lots of structure...fish live bait such as blue gills....there is lots of Flathead reading material on the boards that will help you with your quest. Channel catfishing should be picking up soon as they hunt the faster waters with good boulder structure. Try drifting Hellgramites and soft shelled crawfish around the boulders and pooles with some heavy split shot with a #1 or #2 baitholder hooks, Hold on because that can be some hard hits and terrific runs on the big cats,,,you're gonna pick up lots of bass and gills doing that, so you'll have something for the fry pan as well.

Thanks guys for the welcomes and the advice. I live on the clinch river and we catch a lot of channels starting in July and an occasional flathead. I've been cattin for many years and it is my favorite. I'm just not familiar with the NEW River and I'm struggling with location. I'm also up for some James River or other Va and Tenn rivers. If you guys will point me in the right direction I will grab my gear and some baits anf get after it. By the way, you were right on with the hellgramites....the channels in the clinch live them in deep rocky pools below swift current. This is my girls latest and largest catch to date but she's waiting on the spot to hook a monster cat.
